Which Student Loan Plan Am I On?

It is one of the most common questions among UK graduates — and the fact that there are now five different student loan plans makes it understandably confusing. Whether you are a recent graduate or someone who graduated a decade ago and never quite knew the details, here is a definitive guide.

    The Short Answer

When and where you studiedYour plan
England or Wales, before September 2012Plan 1
Scotland or Northern Ireland, before 2006Plan 1
    England, September 2012 to July 2023Plan 2
    Scotland, from 2006/07 onwardsPlan 4
England, from August 2023 onwardsPlan 5
Master's or Doctoral loan (England)Postgraduate Loan

    How to Check for Certain

The most reliable way is to check your Student Loans Company account at gov.uk/repaying-your-student-loan. Your plan type will be listed there alongside your current balance, interest rate, and repayment history.

If you are employed, your payslip will show deductions labelled as "Student Loan Plan 1", "Student Loan Plan 2", and so on. HMRC tells your employer which plan to use based on information from the Student Loans Company.

What If I Have More Than One Plan?

This is more common than you might think. For example, if you took out a Plan 2 undergraduate loan and then a Postgraduate Master's Loan, you will be making repayments on both simultaneously — each calculated separately.

Some graduates from England who studied before 2012 but then did postgraduate study after 2012 may have both Plan 1 and Postgraduate loans.

Does It Matter Which Plan I Am On?

Significantly, yes. The plan you are on affects:

    • When repayments start (based on each plan's threshold)
    • How much you repay each month
    • When your balance is written off
    • What interest rate you are charged

Use our calculators to see exactly what your repayments look like under your plan.
